Over the last week online privacy has been a hot topic again with the the new combined Google privacy policies released for all to read – http://www.google.com/intl/en/
Looking through those lead me to look more closely at a page I’d never really noticed before – https://www.google.com/
A middle aged man who is interested in Winter sports – in particular, ice skating!
See, all the time I’ve been surfing, Google has been helpfully taking note of my likes and dislikes so they can serve me up more of the kind of ads they think I want to see. Like
Internet & Telecom – Web Services – Web Hosting & Domain Registration [that would be my domain shopping]
People & Society – Family & Relationships – Family – Ancestry & Genealogy [that would be my closet ancestry.com habit]
Sports – Winter Sports – Ice Skating [Sports? Ice skating? Google, you have confused me with someone else!!]
And here’s the kicker:
We infer your age and gender based on the websites you’ve visited. You can remove or edit these at any time.
OK, the age bracket’s correct, but my surfing habits I’m assuming my interest in tech and websites makes Google think I’m a man!
